The 11th of July 2010 marked an historic day for the people of Cork with the handing over of Spike Island to Cork County Council from the Department of Justice.
Spike Island has been in the control of the Irish government since 1938 when the British forces left the Island for the very last time. During the intervening years it has served many important roles for the Irish state as both an army facilty and in recent years as a state prison for young offenders until its eventual closure in 2004.
However, under a major re-development plan Spike Island is set for a new lease of life as a unique tourist attraction and heritage site within Cork Harbour. There are also plans to offer a wide variety of recreational activities onsite and a number of proposals have already been put forward to the Council.
This day represents the culmination of a long campaign and a lot of hard work by the local people to ensure Spike Island is used in a way that is beneficial to not just the local area but also the wider economy in County Cork.
I want to wish a continued success to all those involved in this magnificent project and in what is undoubtedly an exciting time for the people of cork.

Press release from the Mayors Office:
“A former school principal who resigned his teaching post to work full time as an elected representative has had his efforts rewarded by becoming Mayor of the largest elected assembly outside of Dublin.
Fine Gael Councillor Jim Daly was elected Mayor of County Cork at the AGM held in County Hall yesterday. The Clonakilty based Councillor resigned from his position of principal in the Gaelscoil in Skibbereen shortly after his election to Cork County Council in 2004 and proceeded to open a constituency office in Clonakilty as further evidence of his commitment to elected office. This commitment was rewarded by the electorate last year when he topped the poll in the Skibbereen electoral area comfortably exceeding the quota on the first count. Yesterday his efforts were rewarded by his colleagues in County Hall when he was elected as Mayor of Cork County for the coming year.
